STCW Refresher Requirements
Under STCW Regulation I/11, all seafarers holding STCW certifications must demonstrate continued proficiency every five years. This means completing STCW refreshers for each of the four Basic Training modules: Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF), Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR), and Elementary First Aid (EFA).
Without current refresher certifications, seafarers may be unable to sign on to a vessel, as port state control inspectors routinely verify that all crew members hold valid, up-to-date STCW credentials. Don't let an expired certification cost you a contract — complete your refreshers before they lapse.
Available STCW Refresher Courses
PST Refresher
Renew your Personal Survival Techniques proficiency — survival equipment, abandonment, in-water rescue per STCW A-VI/1.1.
FPFF Refresher
Refresh your Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting skills — fire theory, extinguishers, team operations per STCW A-VI/1.2.
PSSR Refresher
Update your Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities — safe practices, MARPOL, fatigue, emergencies per STCW A-VI/1.4.
EFA Refresher
Renew your Elementary First Aid competency — CPR, bleeding control, shock, fractures, medical emergencies per STCW A-VI/1.3.
The 5-Year Renewal Cycle
STCW certifications are valid for five years from the date of issue. To maintain uninterrupted eligibility to serve at sea, plan to complete your STCW refreshers before your current certificates expire. Many employers require proof of current refreshers before confirming a contract, so renewing early avoids last-minute complications.
